The video was captured by MacCallister Higgins, co-founder of self-driving startup Voyage, which is testing its own vehicles in a San Jose retirement community.
He refers to it as ‘The Thing,’ due to the bulkiness of its sensor array.
He told CNET he took the video at the intersection of De La Cruz and the Central Expressway in Sunnyvale, and he is convinced that it was one of Apple’s cars.
Test vehicles have been spotted sporting the gigantic new roofrack full of sensors, and experts believe it may allow the firm to easily swap the equipment between cars.
The white assembly and white Lexus SUVs have even been compared to Star Wars villains Stormtroopers.
Apple has had several Lexus SUVs equipped with sensors and cameras out on the road to test its self-driving software platform since April, but MacRumors reader Amy, who lives near one of Apple’s offices in Sunnyvale, California, recently spotted the newest version.
The roofracks contains dozens of sensors, but primarily uses Lidar to ‘see’ their surroundings.
