A mysterious sea creature was photographed “swimming against the current” on the Devonshire coastline.

Shocked bystanders spotted the unusual animal about half a mile offshore in Plymouth Sound, Devon.

Allan Jones was among those to take snaps of the bizarre creature, which he said resembled a “huge crocodile” – or was it the Loch Ness Monster on holiday?

The university technician said: “It must have been 20ft long.”

Animal: Could a monster be lurking in waters just off the British coast?

“There were other people near me and they were asking if I could tell what it was because it looked so unusual.

“I have never seen anything like it – the first thing that struck me was that it looked just like a huge crocodile.

“The creature moved in circles, appeared to curve its shape and moved a considerable distance from left to right, turn and then move back the other way.”

Looks like a Basking Shark, common in these waters. Also the description of its motion is typical. When the shark has its huge mouth open for feeding they sweep from side to side to maximise the amount ingested during filter feeding. Lastly the size sounds about right, Basking Sharks commonly reach 15-20 feet long.
